Thanks for the ideas!

I downloaded SQLiteSpy and SQLite Manager for Firefox as front-ends to run 
the SQL and the response comes back nice and quickly with both (ie in a 
couple of seconds)

This would suggest that, for some reason, it is the processing of the 
cartesian set of data returned that is causing NHibernate some grief.

Why would this happen for SQLite and not for SQLServer or MySQL using the 
same code? I would have thought that the same data set should be returned 
and the same code used to process it. Not the case?
