Let's see, one item at a time..
Thank you HRM, you help make my case.
Stanley, you do too. Preparation is crucial and you prove it.
Pawn ? I thought I'd been called everything but a white man.. I'll add this.

In agreement with your assertions, I would concur that most Honda parts are of
the highest quality, even those made stateside (as in for cars, from my
experience).  But the batteries I have bought to replace the Yuasa OEM battery
come with instructions similar to what you have written in the below
communication.  I personally have not had a problem with these
less-than-par-compared-to-Yuasa.
In fact, even the dealership at one time wasn't selling them due to the very
high price: $110 plus tax, from them.
Following the proper procedure, the battery I procured at the time performed
well for the next five years that my then girlfriend owned her scooter - a
Honda Elite.
This was back in 1989; she sold it in 1994...
As for the "Stealerships," it is the same all over.  I went to Ford to purchase
a plastic tip (original was cracked and broke off) for a fuel injector and they
did not sell them separately.  I would have had to have purchased the whole
injector:  $99.00.
I found a kit at a partshouse for a mere six bucks containing all the parts I
needed to repair the injector and re-seal it, the original seals being hard and
unable to prevent a vacuum leak any more.
Needless to say my customer - and friend - was happy I was able to save him all
of that money.
I don't think most of us "love to hate" dealerships.  They serve various real
advantageous purposes, one being the first to know when there is some defect
that escaped the production line of the manufacturer, or maybe a company making
various parts that the mfg out-sources.
When I have an unusual problem that comes up repeatedly I ask a fellow tech at
a dealership if there is anything coming down the pipeline about it and tell my
customer if there is a recall or something, to take it to the dealership, where
they will replace or repair it for free.
I can remember when a tune-up on a Beetle was only $20.00 and that included
plugs, distributor cap, rotor and condenser, and new valve cover gaskets after
adjusting the valves.
BTW the same starter for an auto-stick shift Beetle that sold for about $30.00
(reman) sold for $125 for a Porsche.
Marketing, my man, marketing.
A Lexus is still a Toyota.  It just has a higher price tag.  Same with Honda's
Acura.
Marketing...
Corporate greed...
You, my man, are but a pawn in their webs;
a good man with a good heart, but a pawn...

OK, here goes. One time only for all to see what Honda has to say about all of
this. (remember I'm one of those evil stealership people you all love to hate)
The charging system is engineered around a certain set of parameters. The
regulator/rectifier is set to decrease output when a predetermined battery
voltage is reached.
In the case of brand X batterys, this may never happen so the charging system
will continue to run at high output. Over a long ride it WILL boil out the
electrolete. Taken over a long time the whole system may fail due to running at
such a high level. The OEM battery is a Japanese made Yuasa with a wing logo on
it. This signifies the battery excedes the criteria agreed upon by Honda. A
battery without the logo is good but not as. The standard is VERY high for
those. The Yuasa batteries made here in the USA by Deca are not as good as the
Japanese editions. Still better than any other. Now how this applies
to anybody is seen in cases such as yours. The aftermarket battery may never
achieve the the voltage level needed. Please do not plague me with the argument
that all batteries are alike...BS. The preperation of a battery is crucial to
this whole system. A battery must be filled and left to sit for at least a half
hour and then charged for 45 minutes at 1/10 it's rated capacity before being
put into service. Failure to do this results in a battery with only 80% of it's
rated capacity and the inabilty to make the charging system perform at optimum.
The battery is an essential component of the charging system and serves to
complement the regulator.
In short, yours does not. You cannot ever improve upon a battery that has been
improperly prepared and put into service. Once the damage is done, it's done.
Our facility does not sell any other brands of batteries.
Just ain't fair, is it ? You have the responsibilty of your own bike, I have
(effectively) the responsibilty of the several thousand that pass through
our shop each year. Our reputation for customer satisfaction dictates that we
use only the highest quality replacement parts... OEM.

I think it is a champion, new this year.

Since I am roundly criticized about my electrical diagnosis, I'll limit my

Hi all!

I am having an issue, occasionally, with my 83 650.  Two weeks ago I went on a
long ride, 3 hours, with no problems.  That was a Saturday, on Monday I went
out to ride to work and heard only a grunt from the starter.  The battery was
low on water.  Filled with distilled and plugged in my charger and drove the
car to work.  After work started right up and has each time (5) I have gotten
on it since then.  So any ideas what it could be?

Thank you for your help and advice in advance.
