Lest I look less informed, the short (45 minute) time is right out of the Honda
set-up and is regarding the OEM Yuasa battery. Other brands ? When in doubt;
read the instructions.
So we can gather that some (?) charging is a must for best results.

Hi Wayne,

I just bought a new battery for my 450 from Canadian Tire, a large
auto retailer up here in the Great White North. I decided to read the
instructions to see if I knew more or less
 than the people who made
the battery. It turns out that they know a little more than I did.

The instructions say that after filling it with electrolyte, to leave
the battery for an hour before charging, and to charge it for 6 hours,
not 45 minutes, at the rate shown in the instructions for the specific
battery, ......... in my case at 1 amp for a 12 ampere/hour battery,
which is pretty close to 1/10 of its capacity. In all cases the
instructions advise charging at no more than 1 amp for the prescribed
time, which turns out to be 1/2 hour per the rated capacity of the
battery, e.g. 7 hours for a 14 ampere/hour battery or 8 hours for a 16
ampere/hour battery. They go on to say that the specific gravity
should be 1.282 after the initial charge which you could verify if you
own a hydrometer, and that the voltage of the battery should be 12.70
after leaving it to sit for an hour or two.

I followed these
instruction and my battery was right on the money.
