First off. find out what parts are available. All lower gaskets and head cover
gasket, exhaust gaskets. Cam chain and tensioner assy plus guide. You need to
remove the motor and have a huge place for all the parts to lay out in order.
Very slow and careful will do this job. Take notes of EVERYTHING and where it
goes. With the motor out, I'll take you step by step. The secret is in being
orderly. Measure each bolt and note where it came from. Becuse of the time this
will take to do not assume you will remember details. Put the motor mount
hardware back into the frame where it came from while the rest of the job is in
progress.
Enough for now. Do not start this job unless you have parts. The real Honda
shop manual should be at hand. There are links to sites with them for free. For
top-end work, any manual for a like model will do. 550sc,650sc,700/750sc, late
model 750. As you progress, you can even degree the cams and make it really
worthwhile. Many resto jobs I have done have come to naught because of parts
availablity. That's why I insist on have parts first. Go slow, do it right.

Yes, please!  At 30K miles, I'm getting some
chain noise, and would like to "not fix what isn't broke"!

There was an improved cam chain tensioner for those (now
only part available if at all) I would replace the cam chain and
tensioner at that mileage. Now the trick is to do it without disturbing
anything. As long as it doesn't smoke and runs well, I would avoid
messing with a good thing. What am I talking about ? The manual says to
remove the upper end and a ton of stuff to do this. There is a better
way. I can walk you through the process. BUT, you have to accept that
this requires you to remove the engine. If you're up for it. my method
will leave the head and cylinder block in place with the pistons still
in place. For a skilled tech this would take about eight hours. For a
novice, expect it to take up a lot of room for and time. Good winter
        project.

54K miles on bike does not smoke, runs like a bear but noticable
rattle at lower rpms & idle. The bike seams to be bullet proof.
Searching NML history I've read about CC Adjuster, Chain or Stainless
Steel valve guides. We just ordered a Clymers not received yet. Would
it smoke if the valve guides were bad & has anyone heard of a chain
breaking or jumping? Is there a breif description or online
illustration to verify the tensioner first - I'm goin in....
