Remember to put the bike on it's center stand to check the oil, otherwise it'll
run all over the floor. If you buy it, it's a good idea to check the oil
regularly. These bikes are touchy about their oil level. HotrodMamma.

  Hi Jay,

thank you very much for such a nice explanation. It is a good idea to try the
stand-up shifting, I did not though about it. I might be getting a friend to go
with me today, and he can ride. As I said, I did check all that I could... all
the electrical, tires look fine (but I could put new ones just in case), all
the parts in the engine I can see look really clean.
I also looked the foot pegs, they don't look old. Although I didn't check the
oil.... I'll do next time.

I guess there is always an implicit risk when you buy an used vehicle, so I'm
not going to think too much about it.
  Thanks again,

  Javier.

Bikes can have low mileage. A lot of people think they want to ride, then
try it and decide they don't. The bike goes to the back of the garage, often
for years, until clean out time when it's sold.

Yes, gauges can be swapped. My bike's speedometer shows 43K miles, but the
bike has 77K. I put in a replacement gauge, that's why.

However if the general condition of the bike is as you say, and the motor
runs clean with no strange noises, rattles, leaks, or smoking, and the
transmission shifts smoothly, even from neutral to 1st and 2nd on the
kickstand, it's probably good to go. Also look at the tires for any sign of
uneven wear. And pull the dipstick and see the condition of the oil. It should
be relatively clean with that mileage. Also, check all electrical devices.

Then let the owner ride it around in front of you. Look for wobbles as he
rides and listen to the sounds as he accelerates, shifts, and brakes.

Check the footpegs too. Do they show wear? That's a sign of higher than
indicated mileage.

Anyway, sounds like a great deal! These Nighthawks are pretty hard to
break. My bet is if you take care of it, change the oil and filter every 3M
miles, and keep the battery full, chain adjusted and tires right, you'll have a
lot of great years of service from this bike.

    Let us know what happens.
