Any oil will leak out if the seals are worn or dried out. Synthetics seem thin, yes; but back when we used synthetic oil in C-130s back when I was in the Air Force, I thought, this stuff looks like water; how can it possibly be better than petroleum??? Well, I have learned some of the reasons. It sticks to things better; and somehow reduces friction even more than petroleum based oils. You have probably heard that start-up is the hardest part of engine operation. Why? two reasons: one, the need to build up oil pressure; and two, petroleum-base oils do not stick to parts as well as synthetic. So there is more lubricant at start-up, because it sticks and because it is more efficient at reducing friction. Synthetics will clean off any buildup of grime and varnish and oxidation at seals and if the seal is worn and the buildup has taken up the slack against it, you will probably have leaks; plan on replacing seals and cleaning out the innards before using synthetic for most efficacious performance of the synthetic oil. That is, if you decide it's worth it...

Been a while since I've been out here. I'm getting ready to get the bike out. Been a long Iowa winter. I'm going to change the oil, filter etc.. I was wondering about the shaft oil. How often does that need to be changed? I don't know when the last time it was changed so I'm going to do it when I change the motor oil. I'd like to know so I don't go too long without changing it again. Also, how about some recommendations on what type of SHAFT oil I should I use? (I know the trouble I can get in asking about motor oil with this group). I've heard that the synthetic shaft oil is too thin and leaks out. Anybody hear any different??? Thanks for any advice you can give. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Nighthawk Motorcycle Lovers!" group.
