My "performance" car was a Beetle with 87's and dual, single-throat Webers.
That means the stock 1600 was only1649cc's, approximately.  It was well
balanced; I cc'd each cyl head, rods/pistons ground to within 0.2 - 0.5 grams
of each other, and compression set at 8.7:1.  It was smooth, responsive, and
the only improvements I could have made would have been a longer intake stack...
It would go over 100 and still got 31 mpg.  I inadvertently "dusted" a
Mitsubishi with 142 hp one day and he saw me and knew the car a year later.  He
declared that the engine contained therein was not a stock one and proceeded to
tell me about when he couldn't overcome my Beetle with  his 142 horse
steed...It was a "sleeper. "
By that, I mean it appeared to be kinda beat up and tired - looking.  But I
could pop the clutch and bring the front wheels off the ground, if I wanted
to.  Just momentarily.  It didn't have that much power.
I got rear - ended, which totalled the car and damaged the pulley and
distributor, but not the engine.  I sold the engine for  what I had paid for
the car, and the guy's insurance gave me $790 for the car itself.  And I kept
the car.
Back then, it was cheap to build Beetle engines, even performance engines.
My last one was a Super Beetle, a '71.  Its engine was in its death throes when
I bought it, so I got it for only $250: no rust, freshly painted, good front
end.  Of course I put my own engine in it, wound up selling the engine before
building another; then had a son come along and stored it.  The fellow managing
the storage place stole it along with another guy's Jeep.  We didn't know and
neither did the owner.  He was embezzling, had a "ghost employee," and
was stealing.  He sold the contents of someone's locker before the auction, the
guy came in and wanted to pay, and his stuff was already gone.  That was the
manager's undoing.  He got fired, of course,  had to do some time as well, and
pay back $30,000.
I've seen a few Harley - type trikes with VW engines in them down here.  Never
made one myself.
Wouldn't do that to a Honda, though...

I have a '70 Super Bee tucked away...383 slapstick auto. SHHH...don't tell! I
bought a '72 Pontiac Tempest and it ended up having a 442 under the hood. I
went out to the desert to buy a '64 El Camino and that Tempest was next to it.
The fella said $200.00 for the El Camino (no motor) and for $300.00 for the
Pontiacyou can drive that one home. He told me that it had a Pontiac 350 but I
didn't look. While driving it home I could tell that was no 350! Don't you love
these old timer stories? That was a long time ago. I still have the Pontiac.

I always liked my performance cars a little plush. OR, pure RUSH ! So, along
with the GS, GN  I could get next to a Dodge Hemi Super Bee (68) the rear
windows don't even roll down. We had a 74 442 / 455 but it was repainted blue
(original white with black skirt stripe) And the 455 was a low-output. 8000
gallon oil truck got that while it was parked. My favorite GTO is the 64 sedan.
(full doors) A friend had one and it went down to a plow truck in a snow storm.
Last year at the local car show (Magungie PA) there was the most beautiful 62
Dodge Coronet 2 dr 413... to die for. Bars cranked up and all...

I'm not much into Buicks. I'm a Pontiac-Chevy-Mopar sort of girl. Bob and I are
putting a front clip on my '69 Chevelle this weekend. I got 2 GTO's, a Charger,
2 El Caminos and more. Car rich, money poor. You know the story. I bought 'em
when they were cheap and have been playing with them ever since. Yeah...I would
need to know what "T.L.C." means on that 550. After all of the work that I've
had to do to my 650 I'm a bit put off by more work on another hawk unless the
price is right. I'm off on a ride with my club tomorrow! I'm going to bundle up
and be out of here by 9:00 or so. HotrodMamma.

I'm thinkin'... take your truck and 3~4 hundred. If it hasn't run in years,
you've got a big job ahead. Add up two tires, battery, carb and caliper work,
fork seals. It's a rare find, but not gold. Haggle and settle. In your
collection, do you have a Buick GS or GN ?

Kevin, I put your pictures on my website: http://members.uplogon.com/kyle/kevin/

Anyone who wants to look at it can go there. If you don't want them
there, I'll take them down.
