no guts no glory! It's a beautiful day here...67 degrees and no wind. I think
I'll go for a bit of a ride....

If mamma wants to be a half-wit I'll go along with it. I'm not going to argue
with a woman who carries a sidearm ;)

    Heard u talk, Mamma. U ain't no half-a-wit...And I agree. No half-wit
manuals. Factory uses tech writers of the higher or highest caliber. My uncle
helped write the overhaul manual for the 747, and believe me, he can write...

Heck no! Factory manual here. I do not meddle with half-wit books as I'm
only half-a-wit myself.

If you're reading the Clymer manual the colors don't matter anyhow since
they're probably wrong in the first place ;) Luckily my new bike came with the
Honda manual thrown in with the deal.

Especially one the size of the diagram for the beastly Hawk....it needs
to be bigger. (Then there's the way that one wire changes colors when passing
thru several relays and one must keep track of all that business too...)

I had a few for my old bike printed out 11"x17" and laminated. those
are nice because you can carry them around the bike and don't worry about
getting them greasy. It's still really nice to just walk up to the wall and
stare at a big printout though. Makes it easier for me to understand.

I'm glad to hear that you fixed it. I'll have to scan my wiring
diagram onto a "D" sized sheet next time. I used the one in my book with
colored pencils to trace my short. It would be easier this way. HotrodMamma.

              I fixed it!!!
Many thanks to everyone's suggestions, but mostly to Dennis as it
was his suggestion that sent me in the right direction. I got a buddy at my old
job to print out the wiring diagram on the plotters at 36" x 48" so I could SEE
it. I knew the problem had to involve both the starter and the tachometer, so i
stared at the diagram for 30 minutes and figured it out. The two had the Black
wire in common. I traced the black wire and figured out the problem was a fuse.
The fuse wasn't blown, it was just old and falling apart in pieces. Full
write-up on my blog ofcourse ;)

There was a writeup on this some time back, and I think Dennis
was the one to explain it. I think he mentioned the exciter coils or something
like that. It is weak and quits when it gets too hot.

Doubtful it's the starter if the bike died when in motion,
though your
standstill experience could be a sign of a starter glitch.

If the lights come on but the bike won't start, put it in
second gear
and rock it until the engine rotates just a bit. That will move
the
starter off a worn spot if that's the problem, and it will
start right
up next push of the button. Fix is to rebuild the starter (any
automotive electrical shop can do it ... mine was rebuilt for
$90) and
reinstall. But that death in motion thing is probably a bad
connection to the battery or ig switch.
