I have a 93 Nighthawk 750. The picture that someone shared with us
from eBay appears to be the same backrest as I have. From what I
recall, I did not have to make any cuts to the plastic cowling,
although it was a little snug. The two front mounts are easy enough to
figure out - they screw into the shock absorber mounts. Those bolts
are accessible on the outside of the side plastic panels. Make sure
that whatever you tighten down there is metal against metal, not metal
against plastic, because in that case, the plastic will break. They
have spacers that are meant to take this pressure - don't lose them.
The rear backrest mounts were a little more tricky. I had to remove
some stuff on the rear fender and brake light area, as I recall. You
then have to tighten the mounting bolts from the inside, before
putting the brake light and fender stuff back on. Or actually, you
have to have it all on, but unscrewed and an inch out of position.
It's not so easy as just pulling the tail-light out, bolting the
backrest on, and then putting the tail light back on. They all have to
be positioned at the same time.

I needed to buy new bolts for the rear mounts. The stock bolts were
too short to accommodate the mounting brackets. And since there is not
an infinite offering of metric bolts lengths, the next longer size was
too long, so it bottomed out in the hole and was still loose. So for
the third or fourth time I had to head back to the hardware store and
buy washers and spacers and lock washers, etc. to make this work. I
forget which combination of bolt lengths and washers worked for me.
It's difficult to hold those washers in place in that confined space
while you try to simultaneously screw in both bolts at once. Get
yourself extra washers and bolts, because they'll be dropping on the
ground and rolling off into the night, or into that strange black hole
of space under the taillight. But you definitely want as manny spacers
as you can put there, otherwise, the brackets will have to bend or
move a 16th or 8th of an inch while you crank them down, and that can
lead to stress and cracking.

On mine, I managed to crack one of the plastic tabs when bolting down
the rear brackets. There are metal spacers there, which are designed
to take the stress when you crank down those bolts. Perhaps they are
just a hair too thin. Or perhaps I stuck a lock washer or something
there that grabbed the plastic and twisted it while I cranked. Just be
careful.
