There's no way to say what this bike needs without digging into it.
It's like remodeling an older house.  There's ALWAYS hidden problems
and unexpected expenses..  Be prepared for that, $500 is a good
starting price but don't think you're going to get by with just that.
If your friend is going to do the work himself he can save some coin,
but if he needs a repair shop, then that will drive the total cost
up.  I was looking at an 83 Honda Sabre for $500.  I asked for some
advice of this group and was told that it shares the same motor with
the Magna and some parts are real hard to come by.  If you can get by
with a couple of cans of Seafoam, then that great, but I would count
on other hidden expenses.
