Yes, but I have been told that that is not good for the alternator; I used that 
test a few times before being informed not to.
Being as the charging system on Hawks is a bit weak anyway, I wouldn't do it.

As on a car - if the alternator works, you can take the hot wire off the 
battery while it's running & it shouldn't phase it
