Subject:        Starter Motor - new Brushes
Dennis H.
I've got my new brushes for the starter motor on my '86 CB700SC and I've pulled
my starter motor apart - being careful to note where all the washers go and in
what order.
I'm looking at where the brushes rub on the shaft (see photos) and I can see
that each copper pad is slightly rounded.  I have a big vertical drill press
here so I think I'll do what you did and spin it on the drill press and start
with the coarse paper and work down to the fine.
So, just to verify, my goal here is to smooth and level the copper pads with
the sand paper so that as the brushes sweep around it, they always find
themselves on a smooth circular surface without rough spots or up and downs?
Did you use dry paper of do something with wet and dry?
I've also got some semichrome so I can do the final finishing.
I've attached four pictures.   Three are of the copper pads and one is of the
end cap.
In the end cap, I saw that there are two bits of tape on the side walls.  One
of them, I partially broke loose during cleaning (didn't see it).   What are
these for and do I need to reattach the tape exactly as it was?
Cheers!
