'handlebar switch" as in turned it off... Now the thing about the tach; that is
the fatal sign of a failed ignition box (CDI UNIT) Now let's check for
ignition. Pull the plugs out (all) and hook up the wires to them. Lay them on
top of the motor. Watch for spark while spinning the engine over. Y-N ? Like
maybe 1 & 4 or 2 & 3 ?  There are more checks but that will do for now. The
tach is operated by one part of the CDI. When it doesn't work right it's a good
sign of CDI failure. I'll wait right here.

How do you check or bypass the handlebar switch? I don't have any kind of meter
to see if wires are getting power.

So, did you check for ignition ? I'd say handlebar switch but that's too easy.

My 85 700SC won't start. I rode it today and it went fine. Then I went to start
it again and it is acting like it is not getting fire to the plugs.

I removed each plug and it is getting fire, good compression, and not making
any funny noises when turning over. It just won't start. Fresh tank of gas
also. I drained the bowls and they had a very small amount of flecks in there.
Nothing to worry about though. It usually fires right up with zero delay and
that has got me puzzled. I even tried to push start it and nothing there
either.

Besides changing the plugs, (they need to be changed anyway) Does anyone have
any other ideas that I could try? I just hope it is not anything internal, Like
a timing chain.
