Juli,

First 101 south from Sf to LA is a great ride - until you get to LA.
Check out the atlas by Rand McNally "Ride Atlas of North America:
U.S., Canada, Mexico - $23 on Amazon. It's done in conjunction with
Harley Davidson and show's you all the backroads / side routes. Which
is great when you get into big crowded cities.

I did two rides last summer. One 6 days 1,800 miles. The other 2
days 800 miles. The longer one I started with 4 other people but I
left them after day 3 due to one of the other riders bikes breaking
down. First recommendation - 2 or 4 people - not an odd number or
more than 4. I was surprised but preferred riding alone. You just
cruse at your own pace. As for distance between breaks. It really
comes down to gas and how you feel. I have an 1982 650 so I tried to
be filling gas around 120. Most stops are to fill gas call and text
people and then get back on the road. I also pulled over a lot - if
something looked cool I just pulled over and spent 5 minutes walking
around and enjoying the view - that's the point.

I rode 510 miles on my last day of the 1,800 mile trip - that was a
very long day that included 2 mountain passes, rain for 150 miles,
brutal cross winds for another 150 miles and the last 100 on I5 with
about a million semi-trucks. That was the hardest 100 because of all
the trucks and cards - I had to stop about every 50 miles.

It's best if you start early and just take your time - enjoy you will
be addicted.

Let me know if you have ant questions.
