I believe that the most difficult person to forgive is self. Be gentle with self and you can be gentle with others. The Good Book says to pick the log out of my own eye before I pick the speck out of someone else's. Back in 1968 I was pushing my old Cadillac, trying to get it high enough up this hill to get it started, because the transmission shop where I had the tranny repaired stole mine rather than to to K-Mart and get their own for around $29.00. Many fine people went by, some even from my own church, and they looked and kept going. Finally, I felt a lightening of the weight of the car on my shoulder. An old drunk was in the back pushing. Soon, there were two more, and it was enough with their help to get it up the hill, and turn it around so that I could coast down and start it. They didn't ask if I needed help. They just pitched in. When I commented how far I needed to go, the reply of one was don't worry, mister. We'll get 'er up there. They even pushed it part way down, for a little extra speed. It started just fine, of course. How so, you ask; wasn't it an automatic tranny? Yes; but in the early '50s there was still a rear pump, and just 5mph was enough to start it. I have had a different attitude about the whole addiction scene since. No person is better than another. We are each of us precious in the sight of our Maker.
