Since it's steel anyway, plain fine steel wool and kerosene. Kero, not varsol, because the former has light oil which is good for the protection of the metal; varsol has all oil removed. It is a basic parts cleaner. It, similar to brake fluid, will remove all oil from your skin. Brake fluid will also remove moisture (water) from your skin as well. Stanley

There are far too many "safe" products that can be used to remove boot marks. Has anyone here tried the Mr. Clean scrubbing sponge? Ditto lighter fluid or mineral spirits (both contain naptha and are flammable. Use sparingly on cold pipes only!). Light rust?
