To Kim or Dennis or other most knowledgeable Nighthawkers, When you are adjusting the chain tension should the bike be on the centerstand or sidestand or does it matter? Also, if the alignment marks on the swingarm are lined up on both sides, should the bolt stems coming out of the back of the two swingarms (that the adjusting nuts are screwed onto) be exactly equal in length when the rear wheel is in proper alignment.? If so, wouldn't it be easier just to adjust the respective nuts so that the visible threads on the bolts could be measured and the nuts adjusted for equal length? Sometimes, the longer I go back and forth looking at the alignment marks on each swing arm, the harder it is to tell if they're at exactly the same place. They charge at about 3000 rpm and above so it won't really help. The best idle speed is between 1000 and 1200 rpm. I'm glad to hear that you got out and about. I'm in Idaho and the weather sucks. It is good to be riding again in Colorado that officially means Spring for me. Last weekend I took my bike to a local mechanic. He changed oil, charged and installed the battery, and gave everything a good once over. He also changed the idle speed to about 1,600 so the battery would charge some at idle. I know these bikes do not charge well at idle and he seemed to think raising the idle speed was a great idea. What do all of you think? What are the pros/cons for a higher speed on these 83-85 650 Nighthawks? Any comments would be appreciated.
