Can't claim a whole lot of experience, but I did that exact thing to
my '95 about a month ago.

The Battery Tender Plus even comes with a mini-harness for the
purpose. Topped the cells with distilled water, then cleaned the
battery's terminals and cable ends till they shined, using an emery
board (the kind women use for shaping their fingernails). Coated the
completed connections with a film of dielectric grease (Radio Shack).

You can leave the "dongle" (the plug part) accessible by threading it
out between the side cover and the seat. I chose to thread mine so
that it's hidden under the seat and just pop the seat when I want to
use it. Leaving the plug exposed is probably more convenient, but I
was concerned that, with the plug flopping around in the slipstream,
the wires might rub against something and eventually abrade the
insulation.

Seems to work fine with my BT+, which is a "smart" charger, supplying
only the juice needed to build and maintain a proper charge.
