In recent months, my high mileage (90K+) 92 NH750 has had a growing number of fueling issues, including low speed surging, fuel starvation at high speed, leaks and gasoline odor that nearly led to both me and the bike being thrown out of the house. I was getting ready for a costly four-carb rebuild when a board poster suggested checking the petcock first. We replaced it with one from a low miles NH I found on Ebay and suddenly I had a different bike! There was good driveablility from idle to interstate speed, no more leaks or odors, and an immediate increase in MPG. The repair was proved out on a recent 1,700 mile ride through three states, which included visiting the Barber Vintage Motorcycle Museum near Birmingham, AL (a must-see for any rider.) I averaged 50 MPG and did one back roads day at a hair under 60 MPG. The problem in the petcock was that there was a small hole worn through at the center of the diaphragm, where it sits on a little post, which was admitting gas when it was supposed to be sealing shut. Total repair cost: $34. If you have this kind of problem, check the petcock first. It's a small, simple device that can cause big problems, but also supports an easy solution.
