<<Twice (on the way there and on the way back) I had a sudden loss

petcock not allowingenough fuel to flow. Possible culprits include the
vacuum diaphragm in the petcock, tank venting, or fuel screen.>>

I had this exact issue, and it was the petcock diaphragm. The thing had a
hole worn in the center where it mounts on a little post. Other symptoms
were occasional fuel leakage when stopped, and surging at low speed.

We got a replacement, screwed it in and I felt like I had a new bike.
Smooth running at all speeds, plus MPG went from 40 to 45-50.

BTW, there was no need to empty the tank, though I did run it down to a
gallon or so. The guy who did it flipped it over on a milk crate and the cap
held the gas just fine. He unscrewed the old unit, screwed in the new one,
remounted the tank and I was good to go.
