I have a 1995 Honda CB750 Nighthawk that I use for everything from running
errands in town to climbing dirt roads in the mountains. Somehow the chain
picked up a plastic grocery bag and wrapped it tightly around the
countershaft and it wrecked the seal. So now oil seeps out around the
countershaft onto the sprocket and onto the chain, and the chain drips oil
like the old Harleys I rode in the 1960's. It gave the chain a good
cleaning and oiling, but it loses a quart of oil every 50 miles or so.

My Honda service manual (page 9-3) says that you have to take the engine out
of the frame to remove the countershaft bearing cover with the seals. It
looks to me like I should be able to remove the countershaft bearing cover
and replace the seals, gaskets, O-rings, etc. without removing the engine
from the frame. In fact, it looks like I should be able to replace the
outer oil seal without even removing the countershaft bearing cover.

So I have a couple of crucial questions for anyone who has replaced these
seals before:
1. Can I remove the countershaft bearing cover and replace the
countershaft oil seals without taking the engine out of the frame?
2. Can I replace the outer seal without even removing the countershaft
bearing cover? Is that likely to stop the oil leak?
3. Where is the best place to find the part numbers I need and order the
parts?

I would greatly appreciate learning the facts from someone who has done this
before.
