I don't think a sail boat would do any better in a hurricane than a motorcycle.

lol... i love having the sailboat just in case... lets see... my preparedness
includes topping off my 200gal tanks, a trip to publix for food, clean up the
top deck a little so i dont have stuff flying overboard (like the kayaks)....

It was the county judge that kept using those phrases over and over. I think
it's his office or campaign or something that's making the swag now. I didn't
batten anything. I boarded up the windows, moved the motorcycle to higher
ground in the garage, put the cars up on jack stands, and bought some water and
snickers. I had a small 1man sailboat in the garage incase the storm surge got
too bad ;)

wow realy????? damn... are you charging for correct usages (aka sail
stiffening)?? traditional battens were actually made of wale bone....

Perhaps they took the battens out of the sails to lash down the hatches? Most
hatches have latches though. And most battens are too flexible. Again, I am
charging $5 for all utterances of both phrases. They're actually selling hats
and tshirts with those phrases in Houston now. :P

funny... true battens have nothing to do with hatches... they are set in sails
to help keep there shape...

and i never got that message when on the aircraft carrier... it was simply
"tooweeeeeeoooooeeet, now rig for foul weather" ... got to love it

Aye, mate.

The Navy has an understated way of announcing prep for a storm at sea:

"Tooweeeweeeeet -- Now cover over...cover over all hatches and gun
barrels...prepare for a fresh water wetdown"

AKA battening.

Overusers of "battening" and "hunkering" are the young, dumb TV
reporters, looking to make their chops with "on the scene" reports of
a hurricane's "actual" strength, usually from a relatively tame remote
location where there's little wind and rain and no airborne debris.

I like to see one strap himself to something solid and ride out a
Category 5 from start to finish. Now that would be something to write
home about.
