Re-indexing the pedal worked. It would seem that I was off by a spline or two when I put it on. I thought for sure I'd lined my marks up properly, and they looked right when I went back to check them, but I guess I got it wrong.
Having worked with springs before, my fear is always that, when they get away from you, one of them is going to unseat from its perch and go flying, or at least be a pain in the tush to get back where it belongs. When I can't visually see where they go and that they're all still seated, well... a little bit of anxiety sets in. Thanks for the suggestions, folks.
