Slipping the clutch is when it's only partially engaged. You let the lever
out until it just starts to grab but don't let it all the way out. In a car
this is a bad idea and you'll soon smell burning clutch wafting in the
windows. Bikes usually run a "wet clutch" which is lubricated by the engine
oil and is ok to slip for a while. It helps you to take off a bit smoother
since there's no seatback to keep you from flying off the back of the bike
if you pop it all at once. It also helps keep you from stalling the bike. I
wouldn't slip it for more than a few seconds though.
They'll cover this technique in detail if you take the Basic Rider Course in
your state. (Highly recommended)
