Here's an idea that's just as cheap and functional as what you've got, but maybe a little more presentable:
Cut the sides off a drinking water container (the 2.5 gallon size with the spigot on the front), spray paint it with Krylon Fusion rattle-can paint (the Walmart kind that bonds to plastic). Make 2, one for the left side, so they match. And ride like that until you track down a proper cover. Unless someone is intimately familiar with the 550, they'd probly never guess they weren't stock. And you could give your wife/girl friend back her slightly modified cutting board.
