For me it has been a source of better concentration on the road to the
consternation of a past girl friend and yet my wife is appreciative of it,
because she, like me, has ridden bikes and bicycles all of her life and has an
enhanced awareness of all traffic around her.
I have a niece, on the other hand, who, by contrast, had something like 7
accidents in one year; I made the mistake of giving her a car, which she
wrecked
three times in one month, the last wreck being fatal for the car.  Not
her, mind
you, just the car.
Since it was in my name, I took the 2,000 the insurance company gave me and did
not assist her again, due to her bad-mouthing me to her mom who bad-mouthed me
to my dad in my presence.
I set them both straight:  she was paying for her insurance under my name,
another favor granted her because hers, independent of me, would have been over
$2,500 a half-year; with me, it was  around $1,400.  She was not paying for the
car, and any addidional I asked her to dish out - around $350.00 - was for
front
end parts and tires and various other parts to make the car roadworthy.
I didn't charge for the labor.
We neither of us have had an accident in the last four years; I had one in '03,
someone  ran a red light around four seconds after it turned.  And, I had one
in
'01, rear ended by a drunk driver who disappeared.  Wrapped the rear end of a
Pontiac Firebird around the rear wheels.  Then, because of that I had to use my
bicycle and was rear ended one evening the end of the next month and left on
the
side of the road (out in the country) for dead.
I have avoided accidents in cars with poor brakes from people pulling out in
front of me, and in Houston I avoided an accident as the driver of a fully
loaded 15-passenger van, when some fool took up my stopping space in front of
me
in traffic that was stopping.
I jammed on the brakes, fully expecting the flack from some of the passengers,
but the guy riding shotgun set them straight about what happened.
Any one else would have wrecked, and we would have been  a few hours late
getting back to Lafayette from that job.
I attribute my skills in a car to my experiences on bicycles and motorcycles.
And I have always owned Hondas, although I would love to experience the Moto
Guzzi and BMW ride.

Based on what I have seen a lot of guys on bikes do - they seem to
think that if they ride faster than everyone else, they are safer.
Meaning, they trust their own abilities to dodge / weave over others
ability to avoid them. Considering some of the stuff I've seen 4 wheel
cage drivers do to us on two wheels, I don't entirely disagree with
that point of view. I feel that I am a safer operator of a vehicle
when I am on two wheels - I pay more attention - I tend to be a lot
more cautious - and I have a better idea of what my bike is doing.
Some people (I daresay most of us on here) use this hightened
awareness to be even safer - others it seems simply use this hightened
awareness to ride faster / harder and dumber.
      Just a couple thoughts.

degrees up here this morning!)
