The alternator only charges the battery it has nothing to do with starting. 
First identify whether you are getting spark, fuel, and air. Check the airbox 
for a mouse nest (it happens), plug in an extra spark plug grounding it to the 
block, and crank it, you should have a bright blue spark. Make sure there is 
gas and that the petcock is on and that fuel flows past it. There is a vacuum 
line that is needed for the petcock to work make sure it's plugged in. Repost 
once you have done this. You should have a better idea of what is the issue 
then.
