My first ride was a Cushman Road King scooter. Big, boxy 300+ lb. thing, 5 hp, couldn't get out of its own way. Except for one day, that is. On an ill-advised highway trip to the upstate New York mountains, I got frustrated with the scooter's 35 MPH top speed on a long downhill. So I threw it into neutral and let it fly. Passed cars, 18- wheelers, everything. Probably hit 100, or at least it felt that way. (There was no speedometer.) Good thing there was an uphill following, or the brake (rear drum, no front) likely would have burned up. No Cushman ever flew faster! Eight bikes later, I still may not have beaten that speed on my 750 ... but I've tried.
