Graham,
         It more resembles Marvel Mystery Oil - its red in color - a very
light oil - it is lighter than transmission fluid but a similar color.
         As to 'how can you tell its better' - I don't know - I assume you
can flow test it on a bench - but I can confirm that I did get more power
and gas mileage with the K&N than before.
