A quart in 70 miles should leave a terrible smokescreen behind you that you
couldn't see through!
Did the oil usage occur suddenly with the last oil change? If so, that is very
suspicious.
(I won't even ask if you put the right amount in. I promise!)
Is there no evidence of leaking oil under where the bike is stored? Put a
clean/dry piece of paper/cardboard under it.
Look for oil hanging/dripping anywhere. I can't believe you are burning that
much.

Before you jump to (expensive) conclusions, do a compression test:
Fully charged battery, charger still hooked up.
Engine warmed up, but not too hot to work around.
All sparkplugs out. With throttle held full open, measure and record
compression pressure for each cylinder.
Compare to specs. On my '84 650 "standard" is 170 psi, "service limit" is
156-185 psi. Temp variations.
Add about an ounce of motor oil to each cylinder and recheck/record each
cylinders compression readings.
Compression reading low on one or more cylinder? Suspect problem in that/those
cylinders.
Compression low in any or all cylinders but improves with addition of oil?
Suspect rings, which addition of oil improves.
Compression low in any or all cylinders but doesn't improve with addition of
oil? Suspect valve problem which oil won't help.
Better test is a cylinder leak down test, where each piston is turned to TDC
(Top Dead Center) to insure all valves are closed and the tester is turned into
the spark plug hole and compressed air is added to each cylinder in turn and
pressure drop timed and recorded. The rate of leak down determines the cause
of the problem and its severity. Would you guess it is available Harbor

Hope this will help.

Subject: [Nighthawk Lovers] Need some help - I think the GS-1000 has a major
issue

  Hello All,
Discovered today in the 140 odd miles since I did an oil
change the GS-1000 has apparently burned at least two quarts of oil.
(Thats all I had - so I know it burned that much) This jives with the
changing oil level I noticed and the black spark plugs.
I thought it might be dumping raw fuel into the crankcase, but
I pulled the carb drain plugs and with the petcock in the normal
(vacuum activated) position, no fuel leaked after the carb bowls
  drained.
I'm now fearing the worst - that the engine will have to be
completely rebuilt from the block up - but I'm hoping that someone
here can talk me down from that.
          Thoughts and encouragement?
          -Joey
