Another way of looking at it is that motorcycles are pretty much money
  pits. Period.

  Even new ones.

If it's not mechanical issues that get spendy, it's the "farkles" --
accessories, gadgets, this piece of chrome or that. Helmets, riding
gear, saddle bags, GPS units, windshields, extra lights...and on and
  on.

If I had all the money I've spent on bikes during my lifetime...well,
I'd probly buy another one (!)

The only way to NOT spend money on a bike is not to own one.

No different than sports cars, trucks or any other vehicle beyond a standard
  "Beige Camry" vehicle.

So did the shop give you a thorough diagnosis of the problem, or are
  they just guessing?

From what you describe, it sounds like gas got into the crankcase due
to the carb problem and diluted the oil. That in itself should not
have caused the kind of damage they're describing, unless you rode it
  like that for awhile.

You might want to try an oil/filter change, an air filter change,
clean raw gas from the airbox and crankcase breather -- and track down
the carb problem, including inspection of the petcock diaphragm
yourself -- than see how it runs, before dropping that kind of money.

Topic: Clymer/parts fiche difference
  jimwilliams <[email protected]> Apr 20 06:19PM -0700 ^

I have an 86 CB450SC, and I'm replacing the fork seals. Clymer says
there is a "back-up plate" that sits between the oil seal and the
circlip, but the parts fiche doesn't. My bike did not have one either,
but the oil seal that leaked had the impression of the circlip on it,
so I think it probably needs the back up plate, but I'm not sure.
Anyone have an idea on this one?

  Thanks!

  Jim

Topic: Slipstreamer Spitfire mounting tips needed
  surfswab <[email protected]> Apr 20 06:09PM -0700 ^

National has a new Plexifairing model they just came out with, too.
It's called the GT. Looks the same to me, but according to the specs
it's an inch narrower and an inch shorter.

Haven't seen any reviews of it, so don't know what, if any, advantages
it has over the previous design. The ad copy is not very specific
  about that either.

Topic: Gas tank restoration
  Dan Mtbiker <[email protected]> Apr 20 05:53PM -0700 ^

I had my tank restored for 100. Acid washed, then lined it. It has
  some dents.
A friend in college showed me how to fixed dents in cars and maybe
bike tanks for only about $3.50 to $5.00.

I am going to try this. I seen it work in person in the hot sun of
  Florida, no hair drier.
He used air in the can (air duster in a can). He watched on you
tube. Do a search and see what I mean.

  Good luck.

Warning about lining the tank, if it has a internal vent? make sure
  it does not get blocked.

Red Lion! we got to keep each other in mind Bernie. I see quite a
few bikes I'd be interested in looking at. I'll let you know about
the 550 I'm looking at. I went and saw it today - in great shape.

and hang out. Graham, I thought you were way up there near Pittsburgh.

On my wing I did not like the shifter, so I found floorboards with the heel
toe shifter.

Apparently there are some mechanically-inclined guys out there who have
devised some forward controls for a Wing, but with the opposed four cylinder
orientation your legs end up being spread pretty wide. (I just deal with it
when I use my highway pegs since it allows me to recline when on longer rides.)
But I would think having controls sticking that far out from the bike would
look kind of sketch. I guess it's personal opinion.

Some time ago there was a guy around here selling a Wing just like yours with
forward controls. I can't find the add anymore. I did found this one.

Wings don't allow a feet-forward orientation because of the opposed engine
configuration. (Engine kinda sticks out where your feet go.)

The only thing I can think of is a Boulevard with an aftermake seat (like
Corbin), or just put forward controls on your Wing...

#2 is way lean look at the pipe. Probably needs a carb cleaning. Clean bike
otherwise.

I don't know about that one - it is pretty clean, but doesn't look like it is
running (if you look at the tach).
