and spinright doesn't do the trick. It includes Testdisk which
rocks. You're right about computer shops giving up too easily. I've
picked up drives that shops have "given up on" and recovered the
data simply by plugging it into my linux box and mounting it
normally. I've even used cp -frv to recover data from a drive
experiencing the click of death. As long as the bios detects it and
the magic smoke hasn't escaped the controller board you have a
chance. ;)

tools in Linux which are very powerful. Perhaps the disc is
toasted, but I've seen many Computer guys giving up on drives
because the first sector went bad or just because their particular
tool doesn't work. I hear there are pretty neat tools for mac too.
