So I started my cross country trip. All was great for the first day, but then I started hearing a strange noise that sounded initially like a rock in the engine rattling around. But it doesn't sound like it's in the engine.

It happens in every gear (and neutral) at around 2500 RPM. Goes away by 3500 RPM in every gear.

Goes away immediately when I pull in the clutch if it's in gear. If in neutral, doesn't go away.

Started happening after I replaced the clutch (mechanic did the work, was 1/2 the price of buying the stupid honda-specific clutch tools), spark plugs, and cleaned out the air filter.

Took it to two Honda mechanics, both said they didn't know and didn't think I should pay to have the engine taken apart to find out since the bike is riding fine. One said maybe I dropped something metal into the engine somewhere and 2500 RPM is the harmonic that makes it rattle. Other said that it sounds like maybe something is spinning and scraping on the spinning only at 2500, and maybe the sound is coming from somewhere near the alternator.

I did the listen-with-screwdriver-as-stethascope test on most of the engine parts and can't identify it. Sounds similarly loud on either side of the bike, definitely somewhere in the engine.

I've done about 500 miles since the noise started. It got a little louder, but I don't notice any performance issues and it hasn't gotten any worse. Still exactly 2500 RPM in each gear, and then goes away after 3500. Doesn't matter if engine is warm or cold, or how long it's been running -- it's consistent.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!
