If you've convinced yourself it's a 2nd generation Nighthawk you want, then you can find one in better condition within your budget. I bought my '96 for ' $1600. Most worthwhile 750s go for between $1500-$2500, depending on condition and miles.
Beware of bikes advertised as needing TLC (Tender Loving Care, which often translates into Time, Labor and Cash). Good running bikes can be had in the price range I mentioned.
