No oil? You would have noticed a ton of dark smoke from the exhaust or a sizable puddle under the bike in order for it to be all gone. Low is more likely. Either way, I check the oil on my bike before every other ride just to be safe. The air filter is easy enough to check, if it's been replaced it would look shiny and new, if it wasn't touched it would look dingy and dirty. If you need, take someone you trust who's knowledgeable to go look at it, or even take it for a second opinion if necessary. Most mechanics are trustworthy, but one or the other may be yanking your chain.
