Thanks Sean, I will check them out at ST.... I was wondering what you paid
for Russell Day Long seat. Was it one piece or two? Do you know what they
would cost new?

Also, my insurance is currently through Markel. Do any of you know the best
place for insurance. About 5 years ago, I had it through a big motorcycle
place, but I can not think of its name anymore. Anyone have any ideas.

As a note, my insurance more than doubles with the ST. FYI
I have to wait another day to pick it up. Bummer.

Ron,

Welcome to the ST club - I purchased a ST1100 in October and still
need to take pictures and post them.

You can join the www.st-owners.com site but it's not like this forum.
I still look here for advice.

I took a long time looking at everything from Goldwings, Concours,
BMW, Triumph and the ST1100. I ended up getting a 1991 ST1100 with
55,000 miles on it for about $2,000. It's on another island so I only
get to ride it about every other month. In December I put 1,200 miles
on it in 4 days - which is a ton of miles in Hawaii. All I can say is
that the bike is just stupid fun to ride, amazingly comfortable and
really easy to handle. I did replace the stock seat with a used
Russell Day long from eBay and the fit is probably for someone two
inches shorter than I am but it works great for me. The stock seat -
like all stock seats was awful. When I first got the bike and rode
about 300 miles my upper back was sore because the riding position is
more forward than my 96 NH750. However, with the new seat it's not a
problem.

A friend has a late 90's Concours that I also rode for a day in
Oregon. That bike was just as stupid fun and just as comfortable as
the ST1100.

I've also ridden an late 80's, mid-90's and 2005 Goldwing. The 80's
and 90's size and feel felt like I was riding my 96 NH. The 2005 just
felt bulky and like riding in a car without doors - I didn't like
riding it.

Net: the ST's and Consours are comfortable, fun, long distance sport
bikes. On one business trip I took off at 4:45 am on my ST and went
over the high pass on the Island of Hawaii (9,000+) feet. Cruising at
100mph up hill at 8,000+ feet was not a problem - about 3/4 throttle.
Later in the day I passed 7 cars on a stretch of highway and was doing
115 long before I expected it. That was stupid. The point is that
the ST's and Concours's are just what they are advertised to be -
sport bikes made for long touring and winding roads. I put 280 miles
on the ST starting with 120 at 4:45am, 6 hours of meetings, 160 miles
back, flight home and 25 mile ride on the Nighthawk to my house. I
wasn't tired from riding until about 15 miles into riding the
Nighthawk home. It was a very long day but not from the riding, just
clock time.

Enjoy your ride and keep us posted when you do your fist marathon day
(500+ miles).

Sean

Bill Mayer’s site says they do not sell seats with backrests for liability
reasons.  Do you know what that is about? Are they dangerous if they crash,
or do the brackrests fail…. What’s that about.

quite a while. I really like them, and the reviews are pretty good. I keep
telling myself I will get one eventually, but that requires a lot more cash
than I what I able to spend now. I guess when the time comes I will have to
seriously compare it with the st1300, that is why I am interested in your
review. It is a bummer you cannot keep the NH.

would not worry about losing my luggage as one blogger suggested.  However
when the side cases are off it looks pretty lame.  So I am planning on
leaving them on expect when I go into a hotel or put the bike up for the
winter.

possible for a few reasons.  I will miss my NH.  Having your cake and eating
too is a tricky thing I have not mastered. I am fortunate my wife supports
having the one.

only one 4 Cylinder, the VQuad.  They are so in demand that you can not get
one without a ton of money.   That speaks volumes to me… but I’m a Honda
guy.

about that, because my schedule would probably not allow me to go on any of
their schedule events… but maybe I would have. I don’t know. But I will be
going the pastor’s conferences in style.

heard they are not, but that might be the case of the nt700. If you come to
virginia let us know, there are a few folks that live in the DC metro area,
we might get together and all.

> Hay Guys,  thanks for all your help.  I saw the ST1300 first today on my
list, because I was leaning towards it.  I was surprised in a good way. I
rode even better than I hoped.  It has an adjustable nob for the suspension,
hookup for GPS, and an electric shield.  Even on the medium setting on the
suspension was quite smooth.  It’s a Honda so all the nobs even seemed be in
the right place.  And the 1300 engine what a rush. I knew that was the one.
I put a $100 on it and will pick it up tomorrow.  I still plan on getting a
Corbin / comfort seat and backrest.  So if you know anyone who has them, let
me know.  Thanks so much…This is the right bike for me on the open road, and
in the city.  Yaaaaa Hooo!  I just may go and visit my mom in Virginia this
summer on it.
