Along the lines of reading plugs, you have to make sure the engine is hot or else they will be sooty from starting it with the choke. Take the bike for a 10 minute ride, then pull into your driveway and let it idle for a minute, then shut it off and pull the plugs. Ideally plugs that have been used for a while should have brown/tan insulators.
