Just wanted to post an update on this thread. Thanks everyone for all the comments/suggestions! Following the advice to try things out before the trip, I took a short 200 + mile round trip from Long Beach to San Diego. Robert and I had a great trip!! (Note: Have started calling my bike after the Blues singer Robert Nighthawk. I listen to a lot of Blues while riding and it just seems to fit! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Nighthawk)
I picked up a crampbuster ($5.99/Cycle Gear) and it loved it! I seem to become more comfortable with it using "Kyle's position" of just off the end of the throttle. Can grab it when I need it. I only kept track of gas mileage from SD back to the LBC (Long Beach), but I traveled 113 miles, and filled the tank up with 2.385 gallons. 47.38 MPG Was in the carpool lane doing roughly 75-85 most of the time, so I don't know if that is good highway mileage or not. Any thoughts? Changed the oil before I left, used Castrol 10/40 Motorcycle Oil and the Fram PH6017A filter. (used cause it matched the color of the bike) No leaks, no problems. (Note, from reading the posts I know everyone in Nighthawkia has their own preferences, I posted what I used for information purposes only) The Spitfire windshield was great, just right. Knocked wind off my chest area, but during the hot part of the day, I only rode with a light jacket and could get enough air flow to stay cool. I did find out that the arms on my front turn signals are broken/cracked. When I got to SD I saw the lights were pointing straight down. Will have to find some of those. I imagine I can only get them aftermarket somewhere. Any suggestions? All in all, the Nighthawk handled really well. I think it will do well on the trip to TX.
