I would liken the 700 more to a mini-ST than a NH. The bike has a lot of really good features, however it falls short for me. The seat, windshield and the storage are great for a laptop and long commutes, but the chain, engine and suspension kill it for me. What makes the ST an ST is the beast of an engine. There are reports that the ST can blow off a Ninja 650, to their dismay. Mine get 50+ miles per gallon on trips and when I am not chasing it. I would not mind the fairing to work on the bike, since as I have found on my ST, you save a bunch of time when it comes to cleanups. It seems like a great bike for a newbie/commuter. The biggest, best feature is the luggage available. However if you add those features I am sure the price bumps up. I would much rather have my 2005 ST than a new 700. That's my thoughts.

The rear brake was kind of weak, and it was running really lean, but I think that was because it doesn't get ridden very much. In fact the sales guy had trouble starting it, and told me to "blow it out for him". It is in the 400Lb range and makes 110 HP with about 65 Ft/LBs torque, so when that inline 4 gets wound up it really screams, I think I did power wheelie a little in 2nd at about 70 MPH. The torque is nice too, it didn't grumble at all, even when I let it go down below 3K and did a hard roll on. If I was in the market for a modern naked, I'd definately pick one up, you could probably get a demo unit for 6K.
