It is really difficult to tell how much you should spend on a chain. I would say the right question is which are the best brands? for which unfortunately I don't know the answer. But I would not recommend to settle for something cheap, since a broken chain can be extremely dangerous for both you and the bike. Kurt already explained about the chain tool. Particularly I have a dremel tool which I use to cut the old chain (the simplest way I found). If you buy a chain with a master link, then you don't need any extra tools to install. Some people are reluctant of master links since they are afraid of coming loose. I put one on my cbr1000f and I ride hard and so far is being good. Is all what I can say.
