I've been doing something like this ever I was in my 20s, when I used to put clothes, sleeping bag, and tent into a blue ground cover, wrap it up, and lash it onto the back of my sissy bar/luggage rack (which was a lot bigger and could hold more in those days). I have never noticed any wind difference at all--non-issue for me. Now that we stay in motels, I can get away with Samsonite and bungies. I got between 40-50mpg on this trip. The most I paid for gas was $3.79 (DC area), and the least was $3.11 (around Clemson, SC, last pic). As I've posted before on this list, I've got a motorcycle trip to Argentina on my bucket list-tentatively next year this time. For that, I'll need to invest in paniers.
