Easy way: First bolt in the stand, then tie it up in the retracted position. Then, working from above the exhaust pipe, hook the end of the spring around the shaft of a Phillips screwdriver. With the spring in place, put the tip of the screwdriver into the spring's mounting hole on the stand and lever it into position.
