About a week ago I got a call from a guy who asked if I was interested in a
1978 CB750k. He said it hadn't run in 30 years. Still I wanted to see it. It
was in a big garage, covered in dust, flat original tires with only 5800 miles
on the odometer. He said it had belonged to his brother who bought it new,
stopped riding it in 1983 and had died in 1996. It now belonged to his widow
who just wanted to get rid of it. So I loaded it up and brought it home. The
fuel tank was so rusted inside that the rust was up to the filler hole and when
I turned it upside down, a day later tar like stuff had started oozing out. At
first I thought the engine had seized but after bouncing up and down on the
kick start a few times the bike turned over. The carbs are totaled. The same
tar like fuel has eaten through some of the aluminum. I'm doing the best to
salvage what I can however. They are soaking in carb cleaner.
The rest of the bike, once I started in with steel wool and chrome polish is
coming up really nice. The engine aluminum paint is like new. The seat is
like new, even the rims have come up like new. Sorry no before pics and it
will be a little while before I will have the bike in picture ready shape. I am
in the hunt for carbs, tank and side cover emblems. The original owner removed
the badges and painted the bike metallic gray. I will try and get it back as
much to original as possible, specially if it runs well, Graham
