Well putted Kyle. And to answer Mike question from a mathematical (boring) point of view, the reason why the Coriolis effect are negligible in a bath tube but yet affect hurricanes is because the force is proportional to the mass (F = 2m sigma x v). As Kyle said, distances are also important. For example, if you throw a ball you don't worry about Coriolis forces, but yet long range missiles cover so much distance and travel for so long than the effects, although small, may alter the final destination significantly. Somewhere I read or heard that snipers may worry about Coriolis forces when shooting at really long distances.
