It should have its decals, however it does have a more aggressive look to
me without them.

Clear coat does help in protection and brings the gloss level up, however
the old cars never had it, the protection was wax, which has to be done
every so often. From a painting stand point, provided you don't have
sags, runs, fish eyes, solvent pop or large amounts of dust in the paint
and little orange peel (which you will always get dust and orange peel)
you can apply the clear coat with in a window sometimes just a flash off of
the base is all that is needed. If there is errors you can't sand it out
and clear even if you used 3000 grit wet sanding, the sanding marks will
not fill in with clear coat and the base will have a dull flat look, plus
in order to sand the base has to be cured and now its too late for the
clear coat (ever see cars with the clear just peeling off?) clear coat has
to chemical cross link (wet on wet) to bind with the surface. Sorry I'm
rambling on about paint lol too much coffee. But that's my problem, I
know in time the clear will fail if not done correctly, and it will let go
on the decals, so just feel kinda meh about it. I'm not a professional
painter so I could be wrong, but from my research what I've said seems to
hold water as to application of clear coating and what could happen.
