What does that mean?

Let me explain...My son used my 2007 Ninja 250 the other night for a maybe
25 mile round trip ride...the bike sat at his aunts house while they took
her car to get dinner...on his way home my bike just started decelerating
and stalled on the freeway about a mile from our house...of course he
called me and I went to rescue him...when i got there, he explained to me
what happened and told me that the pipes coming from the headers were
GLOWING RED when the bike first stalled out...we tried to get it restarted,
and actually did twice...but both times as soon as we got into second gear
it would just stall...we finally got it off the freeway and into a gas
station...figuring it had overheated, we let it cool down for about 30-45
mins...then tried to start it again...on about the third attempt...a small
fire ignited near the carbs...it went out quickly but at that point we just
decided to walk it home and park it.

Didn't mess with it yesterday, but went out and tinkered with it today...it
won't start without a jump start...then...it makes a clunking locking up
type of noise...then...it turns over and eventually starts...it doesn't
sound to good and sort of pops/backfires when we give it throttle...finally
got it idling and he took it for quick spin, but only made it about a half
block, before it stalled again.

My thoughts are that it overheated for some reason...but why? the radiator
has coolant in it and the reservoir is also at level...only thing is I
can't tell if its filling while it running because it won't stay on long
enough....also, there is a small fuel leak from somewhere under the carbs.

I bought it in Nov. from a young man who said it was his daily 60 mile
round trip rider...and that he had just recently had some carb work done.

Well?
