Couple of things you might try. Drill out the threads, and tap for a heli-coil,
then fill the outside cracks with either Devcon or JB Weld. I think there is a
conversion kit that will change that from cartridge type filter to spin on.

Thank you,

Ross

I'd just get another off ebay. Aluminum can be welded but it is more difficult
because there is no color change, and it rapidly goes between solid and liquid
states. Also you need a gas welder, I haven't heard of any rosin core aluminum
wire. Not to say it can't be done by a novice welder, just practice on scraps
first. I'm not sure if lead solder will stick to aluminum. You can get aluminum
brazing rod with a melt temp around 800F. I hope some of this helps.

Subject: [Nighthawk Lovers] OIL FILTER CAP CRACKED!

hey all, new to the forum.
I've got an '83 Nighthawk 650, been riding for a year, have already made it out
to NYC and PEI. Love the itch.
what you're looking at is the inside of my oil filter cap or cover. These
fractures were from over tightening the oil filter cap bolt and compressing the
cover. It was a bit cold in my garage at the time which didn't help. I filled
the cracks as best I can with JB weld paste. so far so good but I don't imagine
this a great idea for a permanent fix. On top of the cracks to see I noticed
two more along the outside of the cover along the left and right edges near the
seam.

My concern is this cover is on it's way out, and will only cause me more
problems. Does anybody have a spare or know a good site I can get this part?
My other question is about welding it. I read somewhere else on this site that
the material is cast aluminum? will welding not work?
hope to get some answers. I'm tired of doing oil changes only to find it keeps
leaking! and it's going to be nice this weekend!
