Brake master cylinders can need repair after a while, but apart from having an accident and physically breaking it off your handlebars, there is usually little reason to replace the entire unit. The housing contains the piston, spring, and seals, which are what actually go bad with time. If you find that your brakes are not doing the job, something like this may be all you really need:
