I recently got a 83 550, Yup the one and only year of this version. I love the bike, it runs real nice (I bit noisy internally so far)-although I dont know if that is normal) but everything's there and works! 29K miles. I live in Minneapolis MN and need a bit of help solving my "charging" issue.
The bike will run fine, and after it warms up and run it around a but it will die as the throttle goes back to normal idle position. I checked the voltage while running and it isnt getting past 13. (now my battery is not coming back past 12.4 standing volts at the moment due to its unknown abuse from this possibly faulty charging system. Where I need help is determining were exactly my issue is. From what I understand the Alt/stator can be checked by seeing if I have continuity between all yellow lead/wires. (in which they read 2 ohms on all combos) So...thats good right? So my rectifier.....how exactly does one test this guy on its own? I tried different versions of techniques and Im not really sure If I know what Im looking for. Can someone help? I primarily use Yahoo so if anyone could be so kind and respond to me there that would be so helpful.
