I've slowly been piecing a system together myself. There is a great program called WebcamXP that does motion detection based on webcams or IP cameras, and can trigger events such as text messages, emails, and other things. Right now I'm using an arduino and a bunch of sensors to keep track of things around my house. Currently I have sensors on all the exterior doors, a flood sensor in the basement, and a level sensor in the sump pump. It can text me when anything is out of ordinary. There is also a temp/humidity sensor that sits outside. The sump and temp/humidity are graphed, and the door status is shown below in the UI I put together.
